A couple of House Martins in forty or so hirundines (SM and SW) were the first for the year before rain set in. Blackcaps, Chiffchaffs and a single Willow Warbler all singing. A couple of Little Grebes were in close ' whinnying' from the small patch of reeds which was home to Wensleydale earlier in the year and both GCGs were present but no gulls at all and just Tufted Ducks in the 'non-cr*p wildfowl' category!! Otherwise just two calling Green Woodpeckers.
By this time last year there were plenty of Speckled Woods on the wing (picture from last year) but Wednesday of this week looks the only day in the forecast for sun and temperatures for much insect activity.
With everything slowed down this spring I think it might be time to pick up Orchid Summer for inspiration and Falk's Bees of GB for prep for making a better fist of bee id than in previous years!!
