What a surprise!!

Still no snow but bitter; part of pond frozen and hence plenty of gulls of five species standing around but sadly nothing better than two Great Black-backs.
Major surprise was two Avocets, circling, calling and eventually landing on the unfrozen section before deciding this wasn't a place or them and heading off towards Langstone Harbour.

Friday 2nd - now inch or so of snow, pond half frozen with many gulls loafing on the ice, again 5 spp and a couple of Meadow Pipits poking around the reeds whilst skating on ice. No obvious sign of cold weather movements unlike in previous decades. I guess that there just aren't enough Skylarks etc left in the UK and even Lapwing movements have been small judging by other blogs/websites.

Saturday 3rd - rapid thaw so lots of slush. A singing Blackbird before first light and a few passing Redwings from window, two in heron tree and a few calling from 'squirrel' wood plus a small tit flock but little else.
